Supplements are big business — and can be found everywhere, including in a number of ads you’ll come across (maybe even daily). There seems to be a supplement for every health and beauty concern under the sun, which doesn’t make it easier to narrow down your choices. Listening to the advice of an expert who has been there, done that when it comes to supplements is often the best way you can find what you’re looking for as you contemplate which supplements to include in your routine.

Neuroscientist Robert Love doesn’t complicate matters or beat around the bush. Instead, he simplifies things by choosing just three anti-aging supplements that he recommends including in your regimen. These three supplements can be a surprise to people, but Love says they “can slow down aging.”

His second recommendation can even be found in red wine, but before you go out and buy a bottle, here’s why he says it’s important to get this nutrient from a supplement instead of a wine glass.

1. Nicotinamide Ribocide (NR)

Nicotinamide Ribocide, or NP, is a precursor to a source of energy in your body called NAD, according to Love. As we age, NAD decreases, which is one of the reasons why we find ourselves with less energy as the years go on (and explains why you’d rather nap in the afternoon that do anything else). NAD also helps slow down aging and even reverse aging by repairing your DNA.

When you take NR, you increase energy levels, which helps repair your DNA — and keep you looking and feeling more youthful.

2. Resveratrol

Resveratrol is an antioxidant that is found in red wine and it also helps repair your DNA. If you’re wondering why you can’t just indulge in a few glasses of wine each day, the reason is because you can’t get enough resveratrol from wine alone (a supplement is better for this goal) and the negative effects of an abundance of wine cancel out the positives.

3. Curcumin

You may recognize this supplement as a bright yellow spice that is used in many recipes. But curcumin is also “amazing for the brain” because “it helps prevent accumulation of amyloid plaque in the brain” and improves memory function, Love says. Because one of the biggest causes of aging is inflammation, curcumin helps lower inflammation while also protecting the brain.

It’s important to check with your doctor before you begin a new supplement routine. Some supplements do not interact well with others, and a physician can also help you determine whether a supplement is right for your individual health and needs.
