Loss of memory, increased brain fog, and other cognitive issues can be a major concern as you age. But luckily, there are ways you can combat these problems and boost your brain health—including switching up your diet. There are a lot of brain-healthy foods out there, including many that are easy to work into your daily meals. But in addition to the foods you eat, antioxidant-rich beverages can also play a role in promoting a healthier brain and greater cognitive functioning. Green tea, in particular, is one great choice that experts recommend sipping on daily to reap a range of benefits.

To learn more about how green tea could give your brain a boost, we spoke to Lisa Richards, nutritionist and creator of the Candida Diet. She told us that this tasty, relaxing hot beverage could sharpen your memory, reduce brain fog, and more. Find all of her expert insight below.

Green tea benefits for brain health

Green tea isn't just great for a bit of a caffeine boost in the morning! According to Richards, this is "a well-regarded beverage for its potential to improve memory and reduce brain fog due to its unique blend of beneficial compounds."

For starters, the caffeine in green tea "can enhance alertness and concentration, promoting better cognitive function." On top of this, green tea packs in L-theanine, which is an amino acid that balances caffeine's energy boost with "a calming and focused state of mind." That's why, when compared to other caffeinated beverages like coffee, green tea leads to less jitteriness.

But beyond that initial boost, the antioxidants in green tea can do wonders for your brain over time. "Green tea is also rich in antioxidants, particularly EGCG, which can protect brain cells from oxidative stress and support cognitive function," Richards explains.

The polyphenols are another great, brain-friendly plus to this hot tea.  "Polyphenols in green tea may stimulate the growth of new neurons and support existing ones.," she says. "Improved blood flow to the brain is another potential benefit, helping enhance memory and cognitive performance." Amazing!

Overall, Richards concludes, "green tea's combination of caffeine, L-theanine, and various antioxidants makes it a healthy and effective choice to boost memory and combat brain fog." Plus, it tastes great.

Of course, keeping your brain in great shape is about more than drinking one miracle-working beverage. But when combined with other smart habits, it can certainly help you move in the right direction.
