When it comes to the perfect chapstick or lip balm, Los Angeles-based dermatologist Dr. Jessica Wu says it all comes down to the ingredients. "I often recommend that my clients try coconut oil," she tells TODAY. "You can also opt for a sweet almond oil."

Chapsticks like Alder New York's Clove Lip Balm contain coconut oil to hydrate lips, and it's also formulated with "a powerful blend of antioxidant-rich oils and vitamin E to nourish skin."

Wu suggests applying a lip balm at night before bed and sleeping with a humidifier to really keep them hydrated. "If you sleep with the heat on, as many of us do in the wintertime, this is particularly important. Many of us sleep with our mouths open, which dries out our lips. A humidifier can make the air a little healthier," she advises.

In addition to a moisturizing nighttime routine, it is also suggested that you drink a lot of water and eat more fish, too! "It sounds silly, but omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to keep your skin hydrated," she explains. "Staying hydrated is key."
