Makeup is one of the best tools in your arsenal for making you look younger and enhancing your natural beauty. Especially as you grow older it’s important to know how to artfully apply your makeup to highlight your best assets while drawing attention away from fine lines and other signs of aging. While face makeup is great for concealing and airbrushing your complexion, it’s actually eyeshadow which can be most effective in lifting your appearance and allowing for your eyes to look bright and wide. According to beauty experts, this is the eyeshadow trick to master if you want to look your best at any age.
In order to create a lifted effect with your eyeshadow, Sephora Collection’s National Artist Helen Phillips recommends using the corner of your eyebrow as a guide. “If you buff upwards towards the end of your brow you will always achieve an open lifted look,” she says. “The new Coach x Sephora Collection Rexy Eyeshadow Palette ($38) is great because it has playful, trendy shades, as well as ones that will help to sculpt the eye.”
Focusing the shadow on your crease and then blending it slightly upwards as you come to the outside of your eye will create the illusion of a taut and lifted face. If you’re struggling with drooping skin or wrinkles, this eyeshadow technique will draw the eye past it, making you appear younger. Dragging your shadow too far down and concentrating the color on the outer corner of your eye can make you look tired and dull, aging you considerably.
Buffing a solid matte shade upwards towards the edge of your eyebrow will create a lifted, almost winged effect which will draw attention to the high points of your face, smoothing over fine lines and wrinkles. “Use matte shades to sculpt like the shade ‘Cedar’ and buff underneath and outward towards the brow tail. I also love using a single shade like ‘Sunrise’ all over the lid and pulling it outward toward the end of your brow. It creates a simple, yet beautiful look for spring,” says Phillips.
Just as poorly applied makeup can drag down your face and make you look older and tired, using your products to lift your face and emphasize the high points can help to instantly turn back the clock and help you to look years younger. A winged liner, eyeshadow blended upwards, and a good highlight can all aid in enhancing your natural beauty and playing to your strengths while creating the ageless look we all hope to achieve.
