We spoke with Jesse Feder, RDN, CPT; and Lisa Richards, nutritionist at The Candida Diet, to learn about two fruits that are not only rich in fiber, but also play a role in detoxing your body and shedding fat over 40. Berries

Berries, such as blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries, emerge as nutritional powerhouses that go beyond their delicious taste. Rich in fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins, berries can play a crucial role in supporting the body's detoxification processes and aiding in shedding fat, particularly for individuals over 40. The fiber content promotes healthy digestion, helping to eliminate toxins from the body, while antioxidants combat oxidative stress. Additionally, berries have been linked to improved metabolism and reduced inflammation, factors that become increasingly relevant in the pursuit of weight management as individuals age.

"Berries are among the highest antioxidant containing fruits that are also rich in fiber. Berries contain high amounts of nutrients that are known to help optimize our overall health and maintain a healthy metabolism. Additionally, the high antioxidant content in berries are great for fighting off inflammation throughout the body. This too can help optimize our metabolism, energy levels, and bodily functions which is great for aiding in weight loss," Feder says.

He further adds that they are "very high in dietary fiber which can help keep us feeling full for long periods of time and prevent overeating or the urge to snack throughout the day. This is essential for shedding fat over the age of 40."

Bananas

Bananas, often celebrated for their potassium content and energy-boosting qualities, can also contribute to detoxification and weight management for individuals over 40. While not as renowned for their fiber content as some other fruits, bananas do contain dietary fiber, which supports digestive health and can aid in the elimination of waste and toxins from the body. Moreover, the resistant starch found in bananas may have a positive impact on metabolism and fat-burning processes.

Richards says that bananas are "packed with both soluble and insoluble fiber, bananas promote digestive health by regulating bowel movements and supporting the removal of waste from the body. The soluble fiber, in particular, helps bind toxins and cholesterol, aiding in their elimination."

She further notes that bananas encompass vital nutrients such as vitamin C, manganese, and potassium, fostering overall well-being. The elevated potassium levels specifically play a key role in supporting kidney function, an essential component of the body's inherent detoxification processes.

"Moreover, bananas are easily digestible, making them a gentle yet effective choice for individuals seeking to cleanse their system. Including bananas in a balanced diet can enhance fiber intake, promote digestive efficiency, and contribute to the body's natural detoxification mechanisms," she concludes.
