Weight loss can often feel like an easier task in the summer. We’re more inclined to go outside and get some exercise, the longer days give us more energy, and it seems like everything is all about crisp, healthy salads. But when the colder months roll around, not only might you find it hard to brave the weather and head to the gym, but you also may be at a loss when it comes to what to eat. Luckily, we’re here to tell you that there are still plenty of great options that can warm you from the inside—including one breakfast grain. And we’re not just talking about oatmeal! (Although that has tons of benefits, too.)

To discover one type of grain you may not have considered eating for breakfast, we spoke to nutritionist Catherine Gervacio. She told us that quinoa is packed with benefits—and works great as a porridge. Read on to learn more about how this cozy food can help you shed pounds this fall.

Benefits of quinoa for weight loss

Although you may not consider quinoa a breakfast food, Gervacio and Feder both agree that it can be a fantastic addition to your morning meal, not only for the health benefits, but also because, when prepared to your liking, it can be as delicious as your favorite bowl of oatmeal.

"I would say that quinoa is the best grain people can eat in the morning to lose weight this fall," Gervacio told us. "It is a nutrient-dense whole grain that high in fiber and protein." All of that can do wonders for your body as you work towards your goal weight.

"Quinoa provides calories to sustain energy, fiber to reduce lipid levels, and proteins to help build lean muscles," Gervacio goes on. "All these benefits are in one power-packed grain." In addition to other benefits, these nutrients work together to keep you satiated all morning, which means you're less likely to indulge in processed snacks and may even be less inclined to overindulge at lunch.

But how does one go about preparing quinoa for breakfast? Gervacio recommends making a tasty porridge. "Simply simmer quinoa and almond milk until the quinoa is fully cooked," she instructs. (It's worth noting that almond milk has some health benefits of its own.) "Remove the quinoa from the heat, add maple syrup or honey, then top with fruits or nuts. Best to enjoy it warm during the cold weather!"

The toppings are the key to a breakfast you'll love. Whatever healthy add-ins you like in your oats will likely be tasty in a bowl of quinoa porridge, as well. If you want to go a savory route, you can even eat your quinoa as a side for your eggs, which will make for an extra protein-packed breakfast.

No matter how you enjoy it, though, you'll be providing your body with a ton of nutrients it needs to take on whatever the day throws at you—including those fat-blasting workouts that will take you one step closer to the body of your dreams.
