The popular saying “abs are made in the kitchen” isn’t a passing comment made by someone who just doesn’t feel like doing more crunches — it’s truth.
In order to gain the energy you need to actually burn more fat from your belly, you need to fuel your body with plenty of lean proteins that will help you get rid of belly fat even faster than planks (but definitely keep the planks in your routine).
Instead of counting calories to shed belly fat, Nutritionist Alan Aragon told Women’s Health UK a better approach is to focus on what and when you eat. Enjoy your biggest meal after a workout and count on lean proteins to help you lose weight and keep your appetite under control.
“If your goal is to curb uncontrollable hunger after a workout, try lean beef, poultry, or fish – protein-rich foods tend to be very filling,” Aragon says. “Pair that meat with whole-food, high-fibre carbohydrate sources such as beans. Fibre is another element that can help you feel satiated quickly.”
Add these four lean proteins to your diet, keep sugary foods and refined carbs to a minimum, rely on cardio and strength training in your workout, and you’ll have flatter abs in no time.
Almonds And Other Nuts
Some of us avoid nuts like almonds, walnuts, and hazelnuts when trying to lose weight because we assume their high fat content is a no-no. But nuts contain high amounts of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats — the "good" fats — as well as protein, potassium, fiber, and a low number of carbs. Just a handful of nuts can help your body build muscle and keep cravings at bay.
Black Beans And Other Legumes
Few foods compare to black beans and other legumes when it comes to their fiber, iron, and protein content. Unlike higher fat meats, beans are extremely low in fat, chockfull of vitamins and minerals, and help burn fat while keeping your digestive system up and running.
Eggs
Considering how the average medium-size egg has about 75 calories and 5 grams of fat, it's pretty astonishing how well this protein-rich food can keep your belly full and provide an amazing amount of energy to power you through workouts. Don't leave yolks out of the equation, either — they contain the majority of nutrients that can build muscle and burn belly fat.
Greek Yogurt
Honestly, you can add a few dairy products to this list, including cottage cheese, lower fat cheese types, and even low-fat milk. Despite the bad rap it often gets, dairy can help fight belly fat and boost your ability to build lean muscle. Plain Greek yogurt, with its high protein content and super-low carb/fat content, is one of the best dairy treats to snack on if you're trying to lose weight around your abs.
Pure Protein 100% Whey Protein Powder ($17.98)
Don't let busy mornings keep you from powering your body with a healthy source of lean protein. This whey protein shake powder packs 25 grams of protein in one serving, with just 160 calories and two grams of sugar. While you shouldn't rely on shakes as meal substitutes, they can be excellent snacks, provided they are low in sugar and are made with whey, and not soy protein.
