Hair shedding is such a common issue that there are a number of products and shampoos on the market designed to specifically address it. Whether your personal cause of hair loss over age 40 is genetic, related to stress, or has a different cause altogether, you don’t have to suffer in silence and assume that nothing can be done.
“There are a variety of shampoos on the market that are specifically designed to target thinning hair, but it can be difficult to know which one will work best for you,” said Dr. Rebecca Hilton, dermatologist at J-Beauty. “Fortunately, there are a few key ingredients that you should look for when shopping for a shampoo that can help reduce hair shedding.”
Here are some key ingredients to look out for, as well as a few shampoos that could be perfect for you.
Minoxidil
“One of the most popular and effective ingredients for reducing hair loss is Minoxidil, which is a medication used to treat high blood pressure,” Dr. Hilton said. “Minoxidil works by stimulating the growth of new hair follicles, as well as limiting the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is the hormone responsible for male pattern baldness.”
Saw Palmetto
Saw Palmetto is another popular ingredient that can help with hair loss. “Saw Palmetto is a natural extract from the berries of the Serenoa repens plant and has been used for centuries for the treatment of various conditions including hair loss,” Dr. Hilton said. “Saw Palmetto works by blocking the production of DHT, which helps to reduce hair shedding.”
Biotin
“Biotin is another popular ingredient that is often used in shampoos to help reduce hair loss,” Dr. Hilton said. “Biotin is a B-vitamin that helps promote healthy hair as well as improve the appearance of thinning hair. Biotin helps to thicken and strengthen existing hair, while also helping to protect hair from damage.”
Shampoos To Consider
Dermatologist Dr. Leela Athalye at Island Dermatology says these shampoos are picks to consider for thinning hair:
Nizoral shampoo — Dr. Athalye says Nizoral can help decrease yeast that contributes to dandruff. “Dandruff can be associated with hair loss so by decreasing the dandruff, hair can grow better,” Dr. Athalye said.
Niacin shampoos (such as Nioxin) — Dr. Athalye credits this pick for increasing the blood flow to the scalp to help hair loss.
Nutrafol — the brand that provides a fantastic hair supplement for regrowth also has a shampoo line that balances scalp oils without stripping the hair.
In addition to finding the right shampoo, Dr. Hilton reminds us that it is also important to take other steps to help combat hair loss. “Eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and avoiding stress can all help to reduce hair shedding,” Dr. Hilton said. “Additionally, taking certain supplements such as iron and omega 3 fatty acids can also help to promote healthy hair growth.”
