When it comes to healthy meals, there’s no denying that a smoothie is one fantastic way to start your day. Not only is it delicious (especially if you’re a fruit-lover), but it’s also one of the best options for packing in a ton of nutrients into one simple package. Of course, though, a smoothie is only as healthy as the ingredients you put into it. Luckily, there’s a myriad of nutritious options you can add to the mix to help your body thrive even as you age.

To learn more about some of the best ingredients you can add to your smoothie for a healthier body over 40, we spoke to nutritionists Taylor Grasso MPPD, RDN, LD, owner of Simply Healthy RD, and Mary Sabat MS, RDN, LD. They pointed us towards Greek yogurt, leafy greens, and nut butters. Yum!

Dietitians Say You Should Never Put This One Ingredient In Your Smoothie–It Leads To Weight Gain!

1. Greek yogurt

Protein is an essential part of any healthy meal, including your smoothie—and when it comes to the best way to pack some into your blender, Grasso says Greek yogurt is a great option. "Greek yogurt is packed with protein, about 15g per half cup," she notes, reminding us that "having protein at meals and snacks is important for reducing a blood sugar roller coaster." Keeping your blood sugar at a healthy level will help reduce your risk of serious health complications like heart disease, kidney disease, and more. Sabat adds that ample protein will "help with muscle growth, repair, and maintenance," all of which will keep you on track for a fit, healthy body over 40.

2. Dark leafy greens

We probably don't have to tell you twice that eating your greens is essential to staying healthy. Luckily, they fit perfectly into a delicious smoothie. From kale to spinach, throwing some in the blender is always a good idea. "Dark leafy greens have high amounts of vitamin K, lutein, calcium, and folate, which are all crucial in memory function," Grasso says, noting that they're "also high in iron, which is important for women of all ages." Sabat emphasizes the importance of the fiber offered by these veggies as well, which "will help balance out blood sugar levels and help with digestion." Nice!

3. Nut butter

Don't forget the healthy fats! Adding nut butter to your smoothie is a good way to ensure you're fitting this essential component into your diet. "Nut butter is full of healthy fats that help to increase satiety and satisfaction," Grasso tells us. She also says this ingredient is high in magnesium, selenium, and vitamin B6, all of which can promote a healthier body.

Sabat points out that healthy fats like nut butter also contain omega-3 fatty acids, which promote heart health. "Healthy fats also help with satiety so that we feel full longer and are less likely to snack as well as balancing out blood sugar," she concludes.

All in all, a smoothie is a great way to nourish your body with all of the nutrients it needs to thrive. There's no shortage of healthy ingredients that can help you get one step closer to your health goals—but when in doubt, simply throw some Greek yogurt, nut butter, and leafy greens into the mix.
