As it turns out, there are several spices that can help fight inflammation, boost your cognitive function, promote a healthier heart, and even aid weight loss, all of which may be a priority to you as you age. Giving your health a boost can be as simple as sprinkling some seasoning into your meals every day.

She told us that among other great options, turmeric and cinnamon are two you should definitely have in your rotation if you want to stay as healthy as possible over 40. You may know turmeric for its signature yellow color and its great, distinct flavor. But did you know it also has stellar anti-inflammatory benefits that may help prevent aging in your brain, heart, and body?

As Nanavati notes, these inflammation-fighting properties are "primarily due to the presence of curcumin," which studies suggest "may aid in the prevention of heart diseases and improve cognitive function by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation."

Luckily, it's not hard to work turmeric into a range of recipes. "It can be incorporated into sauces, soups, or smoothies," Nanavati says. "It is also a key ingredient in curry powder, offering a convenient way to add this beneficial spice to a variety of dishes." Yum!

2. Cinnamon

Good news for anyone who loves a bit of sweetness! Cinnamon can work as a natural sweetener that's also beneficial for your health, unlike sugar, which we all know can lead to a range of health issues.

"Cinnamon's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties are due to its high content of cinnamaldehyde," Nanavati explains. "Research indicates it may lower blood pressure and cholesterol, contributing to overall heart health. Additionally, cinnamon has been identified to have potential neuroprotective effects." Try adding it to your coffee!

"Cinnamon can be used in sweet and savory dishes alike, or added to beverages like coffee or tea. It's also an excellent addition to oatmeal or baked goods," Nanavati concludes.
