To learn more about which four spices could positively help with your metabolism, mood, and energy levels, we spoke with Lacie Peterson, PHD, RDN, CDCES. Peterson revealed that the four spices you should include in your diet are ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper.

Peterson starts by stating: “Incorporating spices like ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper can rev up your metabolic engine. These spices contain bioactive compounds that enhance calorie burning, improve insulin sensitivity, and increase fat oxidation.” She says, “[They are] a metabolic boost that keeps your body running efficiently, turning each meal into an opportunity to ignite your calorie-burning furnace.”

Ginger

Ginger, with its distinct and invigorating flavor, emerges as a powerhouse spice that contributes to the enhancement of metabolism, mood, and energy levels.

"Ginger can boost metabolism by increasing thermogenesis, the process by which your body burns calories to produce heat. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that may positively impact mood by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. It also helps enhance energy levels by improving circulation and nutrient absorption, leading to better nutrient delivery to cells for energy production," Peterson notes.

Turmeric

Turmeric, renowned for its vibrant golden hue and earthy flavor, is a potent spice celebrated for its potential benefits in metabolism, mood, and energy levels. Whether incorporated into curries, golden lattes, or smoothies, turmeric stands as a flavorful and versatile addition to one's diet, offering a holistic approach to supporting overall well-being.

Peterson elaborates further on turmeric and says "curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, may enhance metabolism by influencing fat tissue and reducing inflammation. Turmeric's anti-inflammatory effects may contribute to improved mood by reducing inflammation, which is linked to mood disorders. Curcumin's antioxidant properties can combat oxidative stress, potentially enhancing energy levels and reducing fatigue."

Cinnamon

Whether sprinkled on oatmeal, added to beverages, or used in baked goods, incorporating cinnamon into your daily routine can offer a delicious and healthful boost to metabolism, mood, and energy levels.

"Cinnamon may improve metabolism by increasing insulin sensitivity, helping cells use glucose more effectively. It can positively impact mood by regulating blood sugar levels, preventing energy crashes that may contribute to mood swings. Cinnamon helps stabilize blood sugar, providing a steady release of energy and reducing the likelihood of energy spikes and crashes," Peterson highlights.

Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper, known for its fiery heat, packs a punch not only in flavor but also in potential benefits for metabolism, mood, and energy levels. The active compound in cayenne pepper, capsaicin, is responsible for its spicy kick and has been associated with a temporary increase in metabolic rate, potentially aiding in weight management.
