When we get older, we become more susceptible to a range of health risks, and our bodies’ natural functions start to decline. And while there’s unfortunately no way to prevent the process of aging altogether, incorporating healthy habits into your daily routine can help slow the process and protect you from certain age-related diseases. One of the best ways to do this is by ensuring you’re providing your body with all the nutrients it needs to thrive–and if you’re not sure if you’re getting enough of any particular nutrients in your diet, adding supplements to the mix is always a great idea.

To learn more about some of the best supplements that can reduce your risk of age-related conditions such as macular degeneration and osteoarthritis, we spoke to health experts Trista Best, dietitian for Balance One Supplements, and Lisa Richards, nutritionist and creator of The Candida Diet. They told us that zinc and glucosamine are two options you may want to consider. Learn more below!

1. Zinc for eyesight

As we age, it is common for our eyesight to worsen. Best notes that one way this can happen is through an eye condition called macular degeneration. “This affects the macula, which is the part of the eye that provides sharp, central vision,” she explains “There is some evidence to suggest that certain supplements may be beneficial in preventing or slowing the progression of macular degeneration.”

One such supplement is zinc, which Best explains is “important for the health of the retina, which is the part of the eye that is responsible for detecting light.” According to her, “studies have shown that taking zinc supplements, in combination with other nutrients like vitamin C and vitamin E, can help to slow the progression of macular degeneration.” Taking a regular zinc supplement may support other areas of your health as well, such as your immune system and metabolism.

2. Glucosamine for joints

Another common age-related disease is osteoarthritis, which Richards describes as “a condition that affects the joints, causing pain and stiffness.” Unfortunately, there is no cure for this condition, but taking certain supplements could help reduce your risk and slow the progression of the disease.

Richards cites glucosamine as one of the best supplements for the job. “Glucosamine is a natural compound that is found in the body and is important for the formation and repair of cartilage,” she explains, telling us that research suggests taking a glucosamine supplement daily can “help to reduce joint pain and stiffness in people with osteoarthritis.” Good to know!

Ultimately, aging is an inevitable part of life, and there’s no pill that will allow you to stay young forever. However, by incorporating the right nutrients into your diet, you may be able to slow the aging process, keep your body healthy longer, and decrease your risk of age-related conditions. Of course, the best supplements for you will depend on your particular health concerns. But for healthier eyes and joins, zinc and glucosamine are two great options.
