Bloating, a common and uncomfortable sensation characterized by a swollen abdomen and discomfort, can stem from various factors such as diet, lifestyle, and digestive issues. While occasional bloating is normal, chronic bloating can significantly impact daily life and overall well-being. Fortunately, certain supplements offer relief by targeting underlying causes and promoting digestive health. From probiotics that restore gut flora balance to digestive enzymes that aid in food breakdown, these supplements can help alleviate bloating symptoms and improve overall digestive function.

We spoke with RD Kylie Ivanir and nutritionist Lisa Richards to learn about two supplements that can potentially aid in bloating. They revealed that probiotics and fiber supplements are the ones to add to your diet. Read on to find out why.

1. Probiotics

Probiotic supplements are a popular choice for alleviating bloating and improving digestive health. These supplements contain beneficial bacteria that help restore the balance of gut flora, which can become disrupted due to factors like stress, a poor diet, or antibiotics. By replenishing the gut with these beneficial microbes, probiotics aid in the breakdown of food, reduce gas production, and alleviate bloating symptoms.

“One supplement that can help reduce bloating and weight gain associated with poor gut health is a probiotic,” says Richards. “By improving the health of your gut, you are bringing balance back to your life and preventing or reducing bloating, indigestion, fatigue, nausea, gas, diarrhea, yeast infections, and general unwellness.”

2. Fiber

Fiber supplements provide a practical solution for combating bloating and enhancing digestive wellness. These supplements, available in various forms like powders, capsules, or chewable tablets, offer an extra boost of dietary fiber to address potential deficiencies in the diet. It's also essential for maintaining regular bowel movements and supporting a healthy gut environment.

By increasing fiber intake, these supplements aid in digestion, prevent constipation, and minimize bloating.

“Fiber expands in the stomach and decreases hunger hormones, helping us to feel full. While we want to get as much as possible from whole food sources such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and legumes, fiber powders can help fill in the gaps when needed,” states RD Kylie Ivanir.
