Liver health is essential for detoxification, digestion, and overall well-being, as the liver processes toxins, fats, and nutrients. Taking care of your liver is crucial for maintaining its ability to function optimally.

Certain supplements can support liver health by promoting detoxification, reducing inflammation, and protecting liver cells from damage. Some of these supplements are commonly used for their liver-boosting properties, helping to improve liver function and reduce the risk of damage from toxins or alcohol.

Dr. Janine Bowring, a naturopathic doctor, TV personality, and author, recently shared the three best herbal supplements she recommends for optimal liver health. According to her, milk thistle, turmeric, and dandelion root are some of the best options. Read on to learn more.

1. Milk thistle

Milk thistle helps the liver detoxify by promoting the elimination of harmful toxins and waste products. This makes it a valuable supplement for overall liver function.

Silymarin, an active component found in milk thistle, “helps to regenerate healthy liver cells” and also helps with detoxification.

2. Turmeric

This anti-inflammatory ingredient is rich in antioxidants, which help protect the liver cells from damage caused by oxidative stress.

“This is great for a fatty liver but also improves the gallbladder health,” she says. “Turmeric is great for gallbladder issues” thanks to “the active component curcumin.”

3. Dandelion root

Dandelion root acts as a natural diuretic, helping to flush out toxins from the liver and kidneys. It stimulates bile production, which helps the liver process and eliminate waste more efficiently.

“As seen in a rat study, histopathologically, dandelion root extract diminished the level of liver tissue injury and 3NT immunosuppression,” she notes.

Before taking a new supplement, always consult with a healthcare provider prior to starting any new supplement regimen to ensure it's right for your health needs.
