If you have a sweet tooth, losing weight while still allowing yourself to enjoy the things you love can be a difficult task. This isn’t only true when it comes to sugary foods; there are also a lot of sugar-loaded beverages that can also hold you back from your weight loss goals when consumed frequently. However, there are a few drinks that could serve as healthy alternatives when you’re craving something sweet.
While it’s true that consuming too much sugar can result in a range of health risks, including weight gain, it’s important to remember that sweet doesn’t have to mean sugary. To discover a couple of the best sweet but low-sugar drinks that won’t be detrimental to your weight loss journey, we spoke to nutritionist Mary Sabat. She told us that herbal tea and flavored water are among the best, tastiest options. Learn more about the benefits of each below.
1. Herbal teas
If you're a fan of sweet tea, herbal teas could be a healthy replacement that can aid weight loss. While sweet tea is typically loaded with sugar and therefore a poor choice for anyone trying to slim down (or just stay healthy in general), many herbal teas offer a subtle sweetness without any sugar or artificial sweeteners.
"Herbal teas like peppermint, chamomile, and hibiscus are naturally caffeine-free and calorie-free," Sabat notes. "They offer a naturally sweet and aromatic flavor without adding sugars or calories." Adding a bit of natural sweetener, such as stevia, is another good option.
2. Flavored or fruit-infused water
It probably goes without saying that good old water is one of the healthiest things you can put into your body. Hydration is a crucial part of your overall wellness, especially if you want to lose weight! But if plain water doesn't quite hit the spot for you, Sabat suggests going with flavored sparkling water or even fruit-infused water.
"Opt for sparkling water with natural fruit flavors or a splash of citrus," she says. "These options provide a fizzy, sweet taste without the added sugars and calories found in regular sodas."
She points out that you can even create your own flavored water by adding slice of fruit like berries, cucumber, or citrus. "This adds a hint of natural sweetness without any added sugars," she notes.
The bottom line
Of course, a bit of sugar here and there won't kill you. If you want to treat yourself to a can of soda once in a blue moon, just remember that moderation is key. But when in doubt, reaching for low-sugar options like these is always your best bet for weight loss.
