Beyoncé is getting candid with fans about her struggle with psoriasis. The Grammy winner and style icon, 42, sat down with Essence for a new interview and discussed her battle with the disease while also promoting her long-awaited new haircare line, Cécred.

“The relationship we have with our hair is such a deeply personal journey,” the “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer told the outlet for its new cover story. She added: “From spending my childhood in my mother’s salon to my father applying oil on my scalp to treat my psoriasis, these moments have been sacred to me.”

The “16 Carriages” artist also shared her motivations for venturing into the haircare industry, expressing her belief that beauty salons serve as a sanctuary where women can experience their highest level of confidence and self-assurance.

“The conversations and debates in the salons and barbershops create a sense of community for the people who look to it as a retreat from their everyday lives,” Beyoncé continued.

The mom of three added: "For them, it’s a place to feel beautiful and vent, laugh, share secrets and pass down wisdom. It’s the most consistent community gathering we have. It’s so important that it’s a sanctuary."

Beyoncé attributed her beauty brand's imaginative name to her past experiences, drawing inspiration from her mother Tina Knowles' ownership and operation of a salon during her developmental years.

"So I took the end of my name, cé, and made it the beginning of the word ‘sacred’ to create Cécred," the Renaissance songwriter went on. "From my mother’s salon, daily rituals with my father, and years of experience in developing a hair care line, the journey has been just that: Cécred," she revealed.

Psoriasis, as explained by the Mayo Clinic, is a skin disorder that results in itchy, scaly patches forming a rash. This condition predominantly affects areas such as the knees, elbows, trunk, and scalp. Essentially, psoriasis is a chronic ailment that triggers an excessive production of skin cells, subsequently inducing an immune system response that targets healthy cells.

Beyoncé and her father, Matthew Knowles, as she noted, opted for the common method of utilizing topical scalp oil to alleviate flare-ups in her youth.

"I have many beautiful memories attached to my hair," Beyoncé added while sharing her excitement for Cécred to soon hit shelves. The line has recently introduced its Foundation collection, consisting of eight products specifically crafted to enhance the well-being of both the scalp and hair.
