Eggs are a great and healthy morning dish, but, depending on what you add to them, they can contribute to bloat. Although it can be fun to experiment with egg recipes as a way of spicing up your breakfasts, keep bloat-causing ingredients in mind to avoid them and their uncomfortable side effects.
So if you are someone who suffers from bloat and gut discomfort, it’s a good idea to check exactly what you are adding to your eggs and identify those ingredients that might be contributing to bloat.
Onions
Onions might seem like a harmless way to add more flavor to your favorite egg dish. However, if you are noticing bloat after eating these vegetables, you might want to limit how often you add them to your favorite recipes--breakfast or otherwise.
In fact, registered dietician Lisa Moskovitz told Eat This, Not That! that onions can be a major contributor to bloat.
Moskovitz explained, "Onions are a major source of fructans, a class of oligosaccharides, or complex sugars, that the small intestine can't break down."
"For this reason, fructans can contribute to bloating, gas, and pain," she continued.
With that in mind, if you notice that you are not feeling your best after an egg and onion omelette, it might be worth skipping the onions next time and finding another flavorful veggie.
Instead, opt for some tomatoes or bell peppers as a way to enhance the flavor and incorporate more veggies into your routine!
