Bluetooth has become such a convenient wireless standard that many of us forget we’re even using it. Whether we are listening to a playlist from our phones while driving in the car or wearing Bluetooth headphones and connecting to our laptops so that we don’t miss a word in a Zoom meeting, Bluetooth is a part of our everyday lives. With that said, it can also be the reason why your iPhone battery is draining faster than usual. Content Marketer Atta Ur Rehman at Printex Graphics spoke to SHEFinds.com about the one Bluetooth setting you should change ASAP if your iPhone battery is always dying.

If you have noticed that your iPhone battery is not holding the same charge it once did, take note of how you are using Bluetooth. More specifically, note whether you are turning it off or leaving it to run for hours, days, and weeks. It is all too common to leave Bluetooth running so that it is ready when you need it, but doing so can cause damage to your smartphone battery. “The plethora of Bluetooth accessories and headphones nowadays has made it very common to leave the Bluetooth option ON even when you are not using it and is the main reason behind battery drainage,” Ur Rehman says.

Unless you are using Bluetooth accessories, Ur Rehman says you can safely turn off Bluetooth by going to Settings>Bluetooth>OFF to reduce battery usage. “You can also do it from the control center but turning it off from the ‘Settings’ is preferred as this stops all Bluetooth activities completely,” Ur Rehman says.

In addition to saving your iPhone battery from drainage, turning off Bluetooth can leave you less vulnerable to cyber attacks. One such attack called BlueBorne put billions of devices at risk a few years ago until the bug was patched.

When you have Bluetooth enabled, your device is open and waiting for connections. In the case of a bug like BlueBorne, if an attacker was within about 33 feet of your device, you would have been a vulnerable target for an attack. Fortunately, the best way to protect your device — and to keep your iPhone battery from draining — is simple: turn off Bluetooth and keep it off unless you absolutely need it.
