Are you ready for the season of bob haircuts? If you haven’t seen them everywhere already, you’re about to: the bob haircut is an explosive trend this spring and summer, but unlike TikTok trends that fizzle and die out, this one is a bona fide classic style that women are making all their own. You can customize your bob to suit your hair texture, hair type, and facial features. You can go a little shorter, a little longer, more blunt, or more tousled — this is one cut where the shape truly changes the effect.

If you aren’t well-versed in all of the many bob haircuts out there and need a little inspiration, Professional Hairstylist Justin Hickox has you covered:

Here are six bob haircuts that stylists say women over 40 should try this season for a youthful effect.

1. Bubble Bob

This bob has more of a rounded shape at the end that curls under. It usually lands around the chin and is styled with a large round brush. This gives it a lot of fullness and roundness. This isn’t a great cut for round faces or anyone with thick or blunt bangs as it can make your face look fuller.

2. Micro Bob

True to its name, the micro bob is the shortest on this list (and it’s similar to a pixie length). This bob has a back length that is above the neck hairline and a front that lands at around the cheekbone. This is a great cut for thin hair because it makes it look thinner. It also works great with bangs.

3. Box Bob

Even though Hickox isn’t a huge fan of the bob box, this geometric, one-length bob with strong lines is trending now. It’s not the best choice if you want to accentuate your cheekbones or bring a lift to your face, but it’s a bold statement look that can work really well for thin and fine hair.

4. ‘90s Bob

The ‘90s bob is a box bob with a little more layering. They land around the chin or slightly longer and have a looser, less styled look that works great with thin to medium-density hair.

5. Italian Bob

This bob is similar to others, but it focuses more on movement. It can have a length that sits anywhere from the chin to collarbone and it often features long, grown-out bangs and a bend in the hair. This shape is great for anyone who wants a ton of voluming and it works for every face shape. If you have thin hair or very straight strands, it may require a lot of styling to get it where you want.

6. Textured Bob With Bangs

The textured bob with bangs has more layering and encourages texture like waves and curls to come out of hiding. Adding bangs to this bob is an unexpected and stylish twist that can work really well and give the face a more youthful appearance.

With this bob and all bobs on this list, Hickox warns women not to march into their hairstylist with just the name of the bob and expect the result they want. Save as many photos of the bob you want so that you can show them exactly what you have in mind and then discuss with them your personal hair type and needs to make sure it’s the right fit for you.
