Nothing's better than finding a restaurant that serves breakfast all-day long. It's almost impossible not to find eggs benedict on the breakfast menu nowadays. The egg dish, which calls for poached eggs and some sort of bacon or ham served on top of an English muffin, has become a staple for breakfast and brunch. But, what really makes egg benedict so great is its hollandaise sauce, which chef Anthony Bourdain says is where all of the bacteria comes from.
The famous chef says that the sauce needs to be kept at a certain temperature in order for it be safe from bacteria. But, most restaurants fail to do that. "Bacteria love hollandaise," Bourdain said, according to Daily Mail U.K. "And nobody I know has ever made hollandaise to order." Gross!
The chef also revealed that brunch is typically when chefs get away with serving "leftover bits and pieces" from the previous week. So, not only do you have to worry about the possibility that there's bacteria in your hollandaise sauce, but the fact that the rest of your meal wasn't made with the freshest ingredients, too!
We know that Bourdain isn't speaking on behalf of all of the restaurants out there. So, that means that your go-to breakfast and brunch spots are probably safe. Still, it's good to know that this could a possibility, right? We'll definitely be taking Bourdain's hollandaise sauce tips into consideration the next time we're out to brunch!
