On June 23, Spears appeared via Zoom to the hearing to contest the conservatorship held over her, and the mother-of-two did not hold back when she finally had the floor. From the audio recording of Spears’ testimony, the singer alleged that she has lost control over all aspects of her life under the conservatorship, sharing that she has wanted to have more children but her father forcefully had her implanted with an IUD so she was unable to do so. Spears also noted that she has been overworked while simultaneously supporting her family financially for years, and she’s ready to take back control of her life.
“I packed my bags and went to that place. I worked seven days a week, no days off — which in California, the only similar thing to this is called sex trafficking, making anyone work — work against their will. Taking all their possessions away — credit card, cash, phone, passport card — and placing them in a home where they — they work with the people who live with them,” she said.
Spears also alleged that she was placed on the drug Lithium, impairing her mental state when she had a disagreement with her management team after turning down a Vegas show. “Three days later, after I said no to Vegas, my therapist sat me down in a room and said he had a million phone calls about how I was not cooperating in rehearsals and I haven't been taking my medication. All of this was false. He — he immediately the next day put me on lithium out of nowhere,” she revealed.
“He took me off my normal meds I'd been on for five years. And lithium is a very, very strong and completely different medication compared to what I was used to. You can go mentally impaired if you take too much, if you stay on it longer than five months. But he put me on that and I felt drunk,” she said.
Since the bombshell audio recording was released, Spears took to Instagram to apologize to her fans for “pretending like everything was ok,” for so many years. Accompanying a post with a quote from Albert Einstein, she wrote, “If you have read anything about me in the news this week ... you obviously really know now it's not !!!! I apologize for pretending like I've been ok the past two years ... I did it because of my pride and I was embarrassed to share what happened to me ... but honestly who doesn't want to capture their Instagram in a fun light!!!! Believe it or not pretending that I'm ok has actually helped.”
Fortunately it seems that Spears has been able to take her mind off of the conservatorship case for the moment, enjoying a vacation with boyfriend Sam Asghari in Hawaii following her groundbreaking testimony last week. The pop star has previously noted that Hawaii is one of her favorite places to visit, and is said to be having “a few quiet days,” with Asghari, according to People. While the result of Spears’ testimony has yet to be revealed, the singer’s heartbreaking courtroom address has made waves as her legal team works to remove her father, Jamie Spears, from this role as conservator.
