Britney Spears’ strained relationship with her sons Sean Preston, 17, and Jayden James, 16, doesn’t seem like it’s getting any better, as according to the latest reports, their father Kevin Federline, 45, is moving to Hawaii with them in just a few months.
The 41-year-old “Gimme More” singer reportedly hasn’t seen her teenage sons in over a year, with The Mirror writing that the boys even stopped responding to their mom’s texts last summer! Britney officially lost custody of the boys in 2008 – the same year her conservatorship started – and they have lived with their father ever since.
Britney Approves Ex Kevin Federline Moving To Hawaii With Their Sons
The "Hold Me Closer" singer has approved Kevin's request to take their sons to Hawaii to live permanently with his wife of ten years, Victoria Prince, and their sons, Peyton, 8, and Jordan, 11. Victoria reportedly has a job offer in the sports department of a local university, while Kevin reportedly has some exciting "professional opportunities" there too, according to People.
Britney reportedly only *just* approved the move, after she and her team were being pressured by Kevin, who she was married to between 2004 and 2007, to consent to the boys moving to Hawaii. According to TMZ, Kevin's lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan gave Britney's lawyer Mathew Rosengart an ultimatum, saying they had until Friday, June 2nd to approve their proposed relocation to Hawaii either via email or letter. Seems like they approved it just on time!
Kaplan previously told TMZ that he asked Britney’s lawyer "several times to send a letter/email stating Britney is OK with the move," but that hadn't yet happened. A source told TMZ that the request was essentially just a formality, and Britney "has no real objections to Kevin making the move," so they weren’t sure why the approval was taking so long. If Rosengart didn’t approve it, Kaplan reportedly threatened to take matters to the courts, where he claimed to be confident that a judge would "allow the move" as Kevin currently has 100% legal custody and 100% de facto physical custody of the teenage boys anyway.
He also reportedly planned to reference the fact that Britney hasn’t seen the boys in over a year if matters did end up in court. And we assume the constant concerns about the "Toxic" singer's mental health could also have been brought up if things got really bad. Luckily, Britney approved the move, with a source telling People: "Britney has always faithfully supported her children and wants them to be happy."
Kevin is reportedly keen to relocate as soon as possible, with an estimated move date of August 1st after Sean Preston graduates. It's believed that Jayden James will finish his final year of high school remotely. Britney's sons are said to be excited to move, as they are reportedly tired of life in Los Angeles and the constant media attention surrounding their mom.
Britney's Strained Relationship With Her Sons
In an interview with the Daily Mail in August 2022, Federline claimed Sean and Jayden were the ones who decided to stop seeing their mother, and there was no outside influence. "The boys have decided they are not seeing her right now," he said at the time, also adding that it was their own "decision not to go to her wedding" to Sam Asghari in June 2022.
One month later, the "Criminal" hitmaker opened up about how heartbroken she was over her relationship with her sons, saying in some since-deleted audio messages posted on Instagram on September 10th: "I used to have my kids way more than Kevin. People don’t remember that part because they always focus on the negative. When they were 6-9 I had them most of the time." She added: "Since they've been gone I've honestly felt like a huge part of me has died. Like, literally, have no purpose anymore. They were my joy. They were my everything. I looked forward to seeing them. That was what I lived for and then all of sudden they were gone and I was like, 'Did my heart just stop beating?'" Poor Britney!
