Last January, Brooke Shields broke her femur bone in an accident and worried fans after she fell off a balance board. The Blue Lagoon icon, 56, just opened up to PEOPLE about her recovery since then, and detailed what has been the most challenging aspects of healing such a painful injury.

“The bone is all healed and everything is sort of where it should be, and I don’t walk with a limp anymore,” Shields said to Everyday podcast host Janine Rubenstein. She added, ” but my strength is really compromised.” Shields then explained that spending time in recovery meant that she had to learn (and prioritize) what her own limits were. “I thought I had my strength back until I started to try to do certain things,” she said. “And so now I have to sort of amp that up a little bit.”

The Endless Love star also discussed her partnership with Clos du Bois and combating ageism in advertisements and media while also opening up her role as a mother (she shares two daughters, Grier, 16 , and Rowan, 19, with her husband, screenwriter and producer, Chris Henchy, 58). “It’s hard to be an older person, but it’s hard to get through your youth in general and to chase things that are just maybe purely physical that feel like they’re gonna change your happiness beyond anything,” Shields said. “The women that I’ve known that have had certain things done that they’ve waited to get done, it’s been the happiest thing that they’ve ever done. They waited, they earned it.” Shields revealed that patience and perseverance helped her in her healing journey, and continues to inspire fans with her transparency and words of wisdom on social media.
