Burger King has announced its newest addition to nationwide menus—and the fast food item seems designed to give rival McDonald’s a run for their money.
According to a press release from the fast food giant, the restaurant will be adding BK Royal Crispy Wraps starting on August 14. The item bears a striking resemblance to the now-discontinued McDonald’s Snack Wrap, which fans are still begging the chain to bring back to menus after its official axing in 2016.
Burger King Announces BK Royal Crispy Wraps
The announcement for Burger King's newest menu item came earlier this week, with the fast food chain declaring that the new order option will be perfect to "satisfy those snack cravings...as summer draws to a close and the school season gets into full swing." The BK Royal Crispy Wraps will be available in three delicious flavors—Classic, Spicy, and Honey Mustard—all playing off of the star of the recipe, crispy white meat chicken.
Each BK Royal Crispy Wrap features the crispy chicken along with juicy tomato, crisp lettuce, and one of the aforementioned 3 flavors wrapped in a soft tortilla. Each Royal Crispy Wrap will be priced at $2.99 each, ideal for satisfying a quick snacktime craving. "At Burger King, we’re no strangers to innovation when it comes to chicken," Pat O’Toole, Chief Marketing Officer of Burger King North America said in a press release. "We first introduced the BK Royal Crispy Chicken sandwich last August, and our Guests have loved it so much that we’ve turned it into a snack-sized wrap version. The BK Royal Crispy Wraps offer our Guests an all-new way to enjoy our BK Royal Crispy Chicken without sacrificing quality ingredients, bold flavors, and the choice to have it your way."
Royal Crispy Wraps Are Most Recent Volley In The Fast Food Chicken Wrap Wars
Burger King is only the most recent fast food restaurant to add their own spin on a chicken wrap. Wendy's added a Grilled Chicken Ranch Wrap to menus this March, and took subtle aim at McDonald's in their own press release about the new item. "It's no secret that at Wendy's, we know ranch," said, John Li, Vice President of Culinary Innovation for The Wendy's Company. "There are many who've tried to master the grilled chicken wrap, but we're not snacking (pun intended) around with our offering. From our classic creamy ranch sauce to the warm wrap folded perfectly for people on the move, our team built a wrap that's worthy of the entrée menu." Wendy's wants to patch that hole in your heart left by its rival's Snack Wrap.
Other Wendy's representatives went further with their claims: Carl Loredo, Wendy's Global Chief Marketing Officer, told CNN that they didn't want to create "a McBland snack wrap dupe.” Where McDonald's retired wraps contained crispy chicken, Wendy's is switching it up with grilled chicken. The reasoning? Loredo said Wendy’s fans are looking for "lighter and more portable menu items."
We'll see how many fast food chains add chicken wraps to their menus before McDonald's is forced to bring back the fan-favorite Snack Wraps. 'Til then, Burger King will be releasing their BK Royal Crispy Wraps nationwide on August 14th.
