Revitalizing Mature Skin: What Derms Say About Caffeine-Infused Skincare
When asked if caffeinated products are safe to use in a mature beauty's skincare routine, Zhao says yes, but stresses that any product with caffeine as an ingredient still cannot entirely replace a healthy diet and consistent sleep schedule. These, she emphasizes, are the most important factors for hydrated, supple skin.
Caffeinated skincare products can "indeed help rejuvenate tired skin," Zhao explains. Caffeine constricts blood vessels (vasoconstriction), which can "reduce redness, puffiness, and inflammation." She adds that this is why you "often see caffeine in products targeting under-eye circles or puffiness."
However, Zhao points out, "caffeine is a temporary solution and does not replace the value of a good night's sleep and a well-balanced skincare routine."
Zhao notes that "caffeinated skincare products are generally safe for use on aging skin." Caffeine contains antioxidants, she says, which can help "neutralize harmful free radicals and reduce inflammation."
However, as with all skincare products, "individual tolerance or allergies should be considered," she warns. "Those with sensitive skin should perform a patch test or consult a dermatologist before trying new ingredients," Zhao advises.
Mechanistically, caffeine "penetrates the skin barrier and performs various roles," Zhao adds. As an antioxidant, she says that it "combats free radicals, thereby protecting the skin." It also serves as a diuretic, which can help "de-puff skin." Lastly, Zhao notes that caffeine "constricts blood vessels, leading to a temporary tightening effect."
As for recommended types of caffeinated products, eye creams or serums containing caffeine can be "particularly useful for reducing puffiness or dark circles," according to Zhao. "Caffeinated face masks could also offer a quick fix for dull or tired skin due to their skin-tightening properties," she recommends.
Lastly, Zhao concludes that lotions or creams containing caffeine can be used to "improve the appearance of cellulite by facilitating fat metabolism and skin tightening."
However, she says, it's essential to remember that these effects are usually "short-term," and "consistent use is needed for sustained results." The more you know!
