Last Friday, Caitlyn Jenner announced her candidacy for California governor, and while she is a widely known public figure, members of the LGBTQ+ community were not pleased with the reveal. Jenner is a vocal Republican who stood behind Donald Trump in the 2016 election, and based off of her lack of a career in politics is causing Californians to question whether she is even remotely qualified for the job at hand. In a statement made by Jenner following her announcement on Twitter, she wrote, “California has been my home for nearly 50 years. I came here because I knew that anyone, regardless of their background or station in life, could turn their dreams into reality. But for the past decade, we have seen the glimmer of the Golden State reduced by one-party rule that places politics over progress and special interests over people. Sacramento needs an honest leader with a clear vision.”
While Jenner supported Donald Trump’s bid for the presidency in 2016, she later backpedalled, calling out the former president for his discrimination against transgender people. However, her delayed callout has left transgender and cisgender people alike doubting her ability to speak for the masses. Trans activists have been vocal on social media about their disdain for her candidacy, and even some of Jenner’s own friends don’t support her political bid.
Transgender writer and friend of Jenner’s, Jennifer Finney Boylan told NBC News, “I wish her well personally. But I can’t see how the conservative policies she is likely to embrace will help Californians.” While Jenner has yet to announce the important policies she will be building her candidacy on, CNN reported, “A source involved with Jenner's campaign said the leading transgender rights activist will run as a socially liberal and fiscally conservative Republican.” Only time will tell if people are willing to turn another celebrity into a politician, but we have some serious doubts!
