Camila Cabello has found a “super empathetic” and “supportive” friend in Selena Gomez, as she said that the two ladies regularly help each other cope with the downsides of fame which negatively affect their mental health. The 25-year-old former Fifth Harmony singer has made no secret of how the media’s cruel jibes about her body have affected her, even taking to Twitter last month to open up about how seeing the invasive paparazzi pictures that were taken of her on vacation made her feel…
“Every time I’ve felt super vulnerable and unprepared— I’ve worn bikinis that were small and paid no mind to how I looked, then saw pictures online and comments and been so upset,” the “Havana” hitmaker wrote in an emotional Twitter message last month. “I reminded myself when it impacted my self-esteem that I was thinking the culture’s thoughts and not my own. A culture who has gotten so used to an image of what a ‘healthy’ woman’s body looks like that is completely not real for a lot of women,” she added at the time.
Another A-lister who has openly shared how she has been negatively affected by internet trolls and the media is the 29-year-old Only Murders in the Building star, who has been very frank with fans about her struggles with anxiety and depression over the years. And the "Don't Go Yet" singer revealed that the two ladies have come to support and rely on each other in terms of dealing with the negativity which therefore impacts their mental health. "She is somebody that's always been so supportive, a really great friend, and a person with great values. She's super empathetic, loyal, and honest," Camila told People in a recent interview, in reference to her friendship with the "Lose You To Love Me" singer. "We have our own little group, and we hang out, and all of our conversations are real."
Camila went on to say that she loves how "vulnerable" Selena is, and how she doesn’t pretend to be someone she isn’t. As demonstrated in the video Selena shared to her TikTok last month, whereby she told body shamers that she didn't "care" about her weight; or people's opinions on it! "I feel like she's never pretending, and I don't feel like I have to pretend around her. Those are the most worthwhile friendships," Camila continued, in reference to Selena's "honest" and authentic approach to being in the public eye in this day and age. "Women like her being so vulnerable and honest with their feelings is such a guiding light for me, and I think it's going to alleviate a lot of people coming after her, after me, in the industry, that feel like they have to be perfect."
This isn’t the first time the Cinderella star has opened up about how much she loves and values her friendship with Selena. Earlier this month, Camila spoke to Access Hollywood at the Variety 2022 Power of Women: New York Event Presented by Lifetime about Selena, and how she values having someone like her in her life and as part of her close friendship circle.
"She's so loyal, she's so supportive," Camila praised. "And also, just as a woman in my life who I feel like really sets an example for being honest, for being real, for being vulnerable, for being kind. Those are the women that I feel like I want to have around my life, and make me stronger. And those friendships… I feel like a superpower, like the female friendships that you have in your life. So I'm really, really grateful to have her as a friend."
