Carbohydrates often get a bad reputation in weight loss discussions, but according to fat loss coaches, not all carbs deserve to be villainized. While refined carbs like white bread and sugary snacks can contribute to weight gain, certain types of carbs can actually aid in weight loss.

Healthier carbs such as sweet potatoes are a good choice, but Kols, a TikTok creator and weight loss expert who focuses on “realistic” goals, shared the surprising carbs she ate to lose over 70 pounds. Some of her favorite items include Barilla protein pasta, Trader Joe’s cereal, and more. Read on to get all her suggestions.

Say Goodbye To Dark Circles, Puffiness, And Fine Lines With This Refreshing Under-Eye Brightener!

1. Barilla Protein Pasta

She notes that Barilla's protein pasta tastes just “like regular pasta.” With 17g of protein, this choice is made with “golden wheat and protein from lentils, chickpeas, and peas.” Many pastas that claim to be healthy have a "grainy" taste, but Kols ensures that Barilla's option doesn't have that texture!

2. Bread

Kols satisfies her bread cravings with sourdough, which contains only about 60 calories per slice. Not only is sourdough great for digestion and overall health, but its lower calorie count also allows her to enjoy more slices without guilt. You can purchase any brand that fits your budget as long as it contains clean ingredients and is low in calories (discover more healthy bread swaps here!).

She also suggests Dave's Killer Organic Bagels of you're more of a bagel fan, saying, "They’re a little pricey, but they’re usually around 190 to 200 calories. A bagel for weight loss? Yes, please!”

3. Mac and cheese

Mac and cheese can be an unhealthy carb due to its high content of refined pasta, cheese, and often fats, which can lead to excess calories and unhealthy fat intake. However, there are healthier alternatives available!

Kols recommends Goodles mac n’ cheese, specifically the Down the Hatch flavor, which has 14g of protein, 8g of fiber with prebiotics, 21 nutrients, no artificial flavors, and is made with real cheese! Doesn’t get better than that!

4. Rice

The refining process for rice can strip away the bran and germ, leaving mostly starchy carbs that can lead to rapid spikes in blood sugar and contribute to weight gain when consumed in large amounts.

As a better replacement, she suggests Trader Joe’s organic jasmine rice. It can be ready in just three minutes in the microwave, making it an ideal option for those on the go.

5. Cereals

Cereals are often loaded with sugar and lack the fiber and nutrients they may appear to have. Instead of opting for the popular ones that offer very little health benefits, Kols says to try Trader Joe’s Pumpkin O’s. It’s a whole grain option with brown rice, oats, and pumpkin. It has 150 calories per serving and is made with mostly clean ingredients.
