A Celebrity Hair Stylist Tells Us How To Boost Volume ASAP With Just A Hair Dryer

For those of us with fine, thinning or flatter tresses, attempting to create more volume can feel like a daunting task. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with products that promise sky-high locks that don’t deliver, or tools that seem to only cause damage to your strands without any boost, look no further.

We checked in with a celebrity hair stylist for 3 tips regarding volume for finer hair, and easy hacks that won’t take up time from your morning. As a bonus, all you’ll need is a hair dryer! Read on for suggestions and insight from Luna Viola, celeb stylist and hair expert (famous clients include Lizzo, Sam Smith and Beyoncé’s Renaissance cast and dance group).

3 Tips For Blow Drying Fine Hair For More Volume

#1: Change Your Part As You Blow Dry

After applying heat protectant to your wet locks, Viola advises to "part your hair on the opposite side than you normally do," to then "blow dry," and "flip it back to the usual side." This, she says, will "add extra volume on top." She also suggests blow drying the hair "against the direction it will lay," since this will "cause the root to stand up straight rather than fall against the scalp."

#2: Use A Round Brush And Dry From Roots To Ends

Viola instructs to "dry the hair from roots to ends while lifting the roots and curling the tips with a round brush" while drying. "Once the hair is dry, put it all up in a loose high bun using a silk scrunchie," she adds. Viola notes to then "let it cool down for 15 minutes" as this easy technique will "naturally volumize the hair." As you use a round brush and hold it on the roots for "a couple of seconds when blow drying," she points out that "adding cold air to it will make it hold the shape longer."

#3: Utilize A Comb And Cold Air

When parting your hair, as it's drying, Viola recommends "combing downward then pushing it right back up a bit so the hair is lifted." She continues, saying to "use the dryer and hold hot air on it for 5 seconds" while the brush is in place. "Then, switch to cold air and hold for another 5 seconds. Release, and the roots will have instant volume," she says. Viola concludes that anyone with thin or fine hair should "try adding alcohol-free mousse on the roots before drying, for extra hold."
