Clog mules are trending right now, and for a shoe that so many people call “ugly” and “controversial,” they sure are popular!
Call it the Kendall Jenner effect, or chalk it up to them being insanely popular with teenagers on TikTok and Reddit, but the closed-toe Birkenstock style is everywhere right now. Despite the earthy clogs being referred to as “potato shoes,” on some corners of the internet, that hasn’t stopped them from flying off shelves. In fact, some pairs are even being re-sold for $350 on places like Poshmark and Mercari. What a time to be alive!
Maybe it's because they are insanely comfortable, or because they go so well with denim. Perhaps it's because all the cool girls from Kendall to Dakota Johnson, Kristen Stewart, Kaia Gerber and more are wearing them (not to mention the cool girls at your college or any of the influencers on your Like To Know It). Some say it's because the 90s are back, and these shoes are what every elder millennial like myself wore in middle school.
I think it's because of all of the above, but the nostalgia definitely plays a part. Securing these clogs at my local mall was a defining moment for me in seventh grade; I paired them with my boot-leg Citizens for Humanity jeans and felt invincible. Ah, simpler times.
Paying as much as Jimmy Choos for them seems ridiculous, though, and luckily, you don't have to shell out hundreds of dollars. I found a Birkenstock Boston dupe from White Mountain, and let me be the first to report that they are just as comfortable as the originals.
