3 Celebrity Diets Doctors Say Actually Make You Gain Weight

August 20, 2017 by Blair Donovan

No one does weird diet fads quite like celebs. The pressure's on in Hollywood to look stick-thin, so some have taken drastic measures to get bangin' bods. However, while they sound effective in theory, some crazy diets can actually do the reverse. Check out three celebrity diets that doctors and experts say can make you gain weight rather than lose it.

When Queen Bey endorses a diet hack, we bow down and follow suit. Beyoncé turned to the Master Cleanse to lose weight for her Dreamgirls role, which has sparked an entire cleansing trend. Even though Beyoncé lost 20 pounds, don't hop on the cleanse bandwagon just yet. Bonnie Taub-Dix, R.D., told CNN that weight loss cleanse users initially see results from losing water weight, but these cleanses actually slow down your metabolism. This makes you more likely to gain weight once you quit the cleanse. Unless you enjoy drinking the same liquid over and over again, you're probably going to stop cleansing at some point. Cue immediate weight gain.

Mary Kate Olsen has often been spotted with coffee in hand, endorsing the "caffeine diet." According to the New York Daily News, it's become a trend in Hollywood for celebs to knock back caffeinated beverages instead of eating. They're under the impression that this can speed up metabolism, but nutritional psychologist Marc David says otherwise. According to David, chugging coffee can actually make you gain weight because it can increase your stress hormones, which cues your body to store more fat. Maybe limit your cups of joe to a few a day.

Lady Gaga admitted to following the "drunk diet" in a 2011 interview. Also known as "drunkorexia," this diet involves skipping meals before you drink alcohol in an effort to consume fewer calories. According to Women's Health, this "diet" method just fills your body with empty calories, which makes you even hungrier for a late-night snack later on.

As much as we would all love to have celebrity bodies, the moral of the story is that their methods don't always work. There are way healthier ways to shed pounds, like working out more and changing your diet. You don't have to resort to some crazy diet fad in the sake of losing weight.
