In the newly released documentary I Am: Céline Dion on Prime Video, Céline Dion opens up about her struggle with stiff-person syndrome in an incredibly poignant scene.

The film, which premiered last month, captures a raw and emotional moment where the Grammy winner, 56, is hit by a severe spasm during a physical therapy session.

Céline Dion Opens Up About All-Encompassing Spasms Due To Stiff Person Syndrome In Her New Documentary

As the "My Heart Will Go On" hitmaker lies on her side on the therapy table, her body tenses up, and tears begin to flow. Dion's slight tremors and quiet whimpers speak volumes about the pain she’s enduring.

The "Because You Loved Me" singer first shared her diagnosis of this rare neurological condition back in December 2022, explaining how it can lead to agonizing spasms and difficulties with walking. The documentary gives viewers an intimate look at one of her toughest battles.

The scene captures a physical therapist guiding Dion through a painful muscle spasm, asking her to grip his hand if she feels any pain. Observing her irregular breathing, he administers a nasal spray. The room buzzes with concern as they debate calling 911 in case another spasm strikes.

Yet, despite her frailty, Dion offers a faint reassurance, "I'm OK." The "Power Of Love" artist explained that "every time something like this happens," it makes her "feel so embarrassed to not have control" of herself.

In the doc, Dion discusses her 17-year struggle with the condition. Dion was insistent that the moving scene in question had to make it into the final cut.

Six months after her unexpected spasm, Dion watched an early version of the film. Turning to director Irene Taylor, the "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" crooner insisted: "Don’t cut down that scene." Taylor recounted this moment to the Los Angeles Times.

Stiff-person syndrome is a rare and complex autoimmune and neurological disorder, affecting only about 1 or 2 individuals per million. This condition causes significant stiffness in the torso and limbs, accompanied by sudden and severe muscle spasms. These spasms can strike unexpectedly or be set off by various triggers like loud sounds, physical touch, or emotional stress.

When Dion opened up about her diagnosis in her heartfelt doc, fans were deeply moved and inspired. They have since flooded her social media accounts with messages of support and encouragement as she embarks on her journey of healing and recovery.
