If your iPhone struggles to maintain its charge, it’s time to put a few simple suggestions into place. Instead of spending money on a new battery or phone, you can instantly upgrade your phone’s performance by doing just one thing every single day. Apple experts say you should make this one change to your iPhone to increase your battery life.

Always keep the background clean

In your fast-paced daily life, it’s not uncommon to open one app after another and keep them open. But keeping more than ten apps open is never a good idea, especially for apps that require a network connection, warns John Tian, Founder of Mobitrix. “These apps are constantly updating and draining your battery in the background,” Tian says. “To maintain your battery life, close all the apps you aren’t using, or at least some of them.”

Closing background apps is simple and takes just a few minutes:

“Double-click the Home button to bring up all the apps running in the background and then swipe upwards to close them,” Tian says. “You can also uninstall some apps you don’t use to increase phone performance and boost battery life.”

While you’re taking steps to increase your phone’s battery power, Tech Expert Daniela Sawyer, Founder of FindPeopleFast, has another suggestion: be mindful of extreme temperatures.

“Stay away from hot temperatures: Your device will perform well in a wide range of assembly temperatures, with 16° to 22°C (62° to 72°F) being the most protected location,” Sawyer says. “It is especially important to try not to open your device to temperatures above 95°F (35°C), permanently damaging the battery limit. Simply put, your battery won't push your device to last on a given charge. Loading the machine at high encapsulation temperatures may cause further injury to the machine.”

In short: remember to remove your phone from a hot car or cover it if you’re lounging on the beach in direct sunlight — the less exposure to extreme temperatures, the better for your phone’s battery.
