Cheese sauce
Who can resist a creamy cheese sauce? Whether you're dipping breadsticks in nacho cheese, dunking tortilla chips in white queso, or even twirling veggies in a tasty fondue, there's no denying that these sauces are beloved. However, Nanavati warns that they could be adding excess calories to your diet and putting your weight loss goals are risk if you're not careful.
"Creamy cheese sauces are packed with calories and fat, making them a poor choice for anyone looking to lose weight," she points out. She also warns us that "cheese sauce is high in saturated fats and cholesterol," both of which pose risks to your overall health (including your heart health) as well as the slim figure of your dreams. Saturated fats, in particular, can lead to a range of consequences.
Then there's the issue of the sodium that cheese sauce is typically loaded with, which Nanavati explains "can lead to high blood pressure, water retention and other side effects associated with too much salt consumption." Yikes!
In general, it's best to avoid processed foods like cheese sauce as much as possible in order to protect your health for these reasons and more.
What to eat instead
If you don't want to dump dipping sauce for good but still want to keep your eye on the prize (your future flat stomach, that is), you still have a few options to consider. While it is best to kick cheese sauce to the curb, Nanavati notes that low-fat varieties could be a good alternative.
But if you're feeling up for something new, she tells us hummus makes a great option. This tasty Mediterranean spread, which comes from health benefit-rich chickpeas, offers up fiber, healthy fats, and a range of nutrients. Plus, it pairs great with healthy, crunchy veggies that can also help you reach your weight loss goals. Of course, you can always go with some whole grain pita, as well.
While we won't blame you if you indulge in a bit of nacho cheese every now and then, making healthy swaps like this is the best way to keep your body looking and feeling great.
