Choosing your maid of honor is an important decision. After all, this woman will be helping you with the planning and standing next to you on the big day. You can rest assured you're picking the right person by avoiding these 10 mistakes.

Thinking You Just Need One

Don't believe the hype that you can only have one maid of honor. If you have more than one BFF, sister or cousin who you want beside you, you can have them share these important duties.

Letting Your Mom Choose For You

Your mom might have some strong opinions about who will be your maid of honor, but this is your decision. So even if she's pressuring you to ask your sister or cousin, stick to who you really want.

Forgetting About Her Finances

It might not be the best idea to ask a financially-strapped friend to be your maid of honor. At the very least, let her know you realize this is a big commitment both time-wise and money-wise, and you understand if she can't swing it right now.

Not Making Your Expectations Clear Before you ask anyone to be your maid of honor, be sure to jot down your expectations. Do you want her to be at every dress fitting? Will she be planning the bridal shower? Do you need her to help out with DIY tasks? This way, she can make an informed decision before saying yes.
Picking Someone Who Doesn't Get Along With Others The maid of honor will help keep the other bridesmaids informed, as well as put out any fires that might arise with the bridal party during the planning, so it's best not to choose someone who has difficulty getting along with others.
Having Someone Who Won't Be Happy For You

Don't ask someone who will be difficult and make it all about them. Whether it's a single pal who might be upset she's not getting married or someone who will complain about every dress she tries on and every penny spent, steer clear of a MOH who is most likely going to make you miserable.

Picking Someone Who Won't Care

While the MOH doesn't have to be by your side through the entire wedding planning process, you want to choose someone who will at the very least be interested in what's going on. Picking someone who hates weddings, appointments and helping out is just going to stress you out.

Choosing Someone Who Doesn't Know You Well

Ideally, your maid of honor is someone who knows you well (remember, she'll be planning the bachelorette and possibly the bridal shower) and will be in your life for years to come. So think twice before choosing that super cool friend you just met a few months earlier or the college pal you haven't seen in a decade.

Believing She Will Be Your Assistant No matter who you choose, remember that your maid of honor isn't your personal assistant. You want to keep your relationship intact well after the wedding, so be respectful and keep the Bridezilla outbursts to a minimum.
Putting Too Much Pressure On Yourself It can be easy to get stressed about the decision--you don't want to offend anyone. But you have to do what you feel is right, so choose the person you feel closest to as your maid of honor.
