Christina Aguilera showed up to all of her red carpet events this year looking hotter than ever—at 43! The pop star has reportedly lost 40 pounds over the past year, and she has all the curve-hugging outfits to prove it. Wondering how she did it? Her personal trainer, Tee Sorge, who has been working with Aguilera for the past 3.5 years, just shared the 5 things she swears by to keep a fit figure. Keep reading for more information.
1. Lift Heavy Weights
While many women stay away from heavy weights over a fear of getting “bulky,” Sorge shares that it’s actually the key to getting toned. “Christina does biceps curls with 15-pound dumbbells and chest presses with 20-pounders,” she says. “She knows they’re not going to bulk her up. What they will do is help build lean muscle that kicks up your metabolism and make your body burn more calories each day—so you’ll lose weight faster.”
2. Add In Some Cardio
Sorge definitely recommends weight lifting, but reminds her clients not to forget about cardio, either. "I throw in a minute or two of jumping rope, stair climbing or boxing after every few toning moves Christina does to keep her heart rate up and really maximize the number of calories she burns," she explains. Keeping your heart rate up will keep you in the calorie-burning zone even when you're doing lower energy exercises.
3. Focus On Core Exercises
Everybody wants a six-pack, so it's important to keep your abdominal exercises in your workout routine, and not just for the flat belly. "Your core is your body's center, its foundation. If you're strong there, you're going to be strong and healthy, period," Sorge says. She added that she has Aguilera doing 300-400 reps of core exercises per session!
4. Work In Intervals
Interval workouts are great for burning calories as you jump your heart rate up, let it lower, and jump it back up again. "Christina slowly jogs for five minutes on flat ground, sprints for three to five minutes, and then does a slow uphill walk for the remainder of the workout. It's amazingly effective at making your body really lean," Sorge explains.
5. Consistency Is Key!
And finally, you have to be dedicated. "Christina worked out with me until she was eight months pregnant--and then started back up a few months after [her son] Max was born," says Sorge. "That's what helped her look so good during her pregnancy--and snap back so quickly." Rather than focusing on the length of your workout, just make sure you show up for your workouts each day. It's better to be consistent and go for a shorter period of time every day than to skip the gym 3 days in a row just to go all out on day 4.
