The beverages you drink can be just as important as the food you eat when it comes to keeping your body healthy—and this is especially true if you’re trying to shed a few pounds. In fact, many of the beverages you drink on a regular basis could be sneaking a ton of extra sugar and calories into your diet, making it difficult to reach your weight loss goals. This includes one popular fizzy variety.

To discover one of the worst beverages that make it difficult to lose weight, we spoke to personal trainer Isaac Robertson of Total Shape. He told us that cola is definitely somewhere at the top of the list. Read on to learn more about what your Coca-Cola habit could be doing to your body.

Robertson says that, in general, sugary beverages like soda and energy drinks pose a serious risk to your overall health, and your weight loss goals in particular. It probably doesn't come as a surprise to hear that sugar can lead to a range of health issues, and these drinks are full of it. "These beverages are loaded with high amounts of added sugars and empty calories, which can contribute to rapid weight gain over time," he warns.

However, when it comes to one specific drink, he highly recommends avoiding regular cola. "This beverage is often packed with a significant amount of sugar and calories. Consuming just one can of regular cola can introduce a considerable amount of added sugars into your diet, which can lead to spikes in blood sugar levels and subsequent crashes, promoting unhealthy eating habits and overconsumption of calories," he tells us.

In addition to all that sugar, the fizzy nature of cola could also make it difficult to fit into your jeans. "The carbonation in fizzy drinks like cola can also lead to bloating and discomfort, further affecting your weight loss efforts," he notes. Keep in mind that your gut health also plays a significant role in your ability to lose weight, so healthy digestion should always remain a priority as well.

Looking for a good way to kick your cola habit? Robertson says swapping your go-to soda with a sparkling water could be a great option.

"For those seeking a healthier alternative to regular cola and other sugary beverages, I recommend opting for sparkling water infused with natural flavors," he says. "This option provides the fizzy sensation many people enjoy without the added sugars, calories, and negative health effects associated with traditional sodas."

You can even take it a step further by adding some healthy fresh fruit to the mix. Lemon, lime, or antioxidant-rich berries are all great choices "to enhance the flavor without compromising on your weight loss goals." Perfect!

While enjoying a can of Coke once in a blue moon certainly won't make it impossible to lose weight, limiting your intake as much as possible is the best choice as you work towards your dream body. Your body will thank you for this healthy switch in the long run.
