We often hear about the foods we shouldn't be eating before bed, especially if we're trying to lose weight. But the focus is seldom on vitamins and nutrients that can be taken before bedtime that can actually promote a deeper sleep and help burn fat while you rest.
A study published in the Journal of Sleep Research found there is one supplement that helped its participants sleep more soundly — and it just so happens to be a supplement that can promote faster and more effective weight loss, particularly if you are over 30.

Fish Oil
Omega-3 fatty acids, also called fish oil, is an important nutrient in which far too many of us aren't getting enough. This nutrient has numerous health benefits that include reducing fatty acids in the blood, lowering blood pressure, prevening blood clots, and reducing inflammation in the body. Omega-3 is also associated with reducing symptoms of metabolic syndrome, which include retaining belly fat.
Unfortunately, omega-3 fatty acids are found in foods like flaxseed, chia seeds, sardines, salmon, walnuts, spinach, and soybeans — ingredients that do not comprise a major part of the American diet.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids Before Bedtime
Study participants who took omega-3 supplements before bedtime experienced fewer sleep disturbances and actually benefitted from more sleep than those who didn't take the supplements. To help burn calories while you sleep, some experts suggest eating a small protein-rich snack before bed (a few apple slices with peanut butter or hummus is perfect) and saving your fish oil supplements for nighttime. The protein can help repair muscles at night and the powerhouse combination of fish oil and protein work together to slow the release of amino acids for sustained energy.
You'll wake up feeling more refreshed and rejuvenated — and ready to take on the day.
