If you’re worried that your makeup might be inadvertently highlighting fine lines, wrinkles, texture and dark spots, TikTok tutorials can offer a plethora of valuable tips and tricks for a more youthful and vibrant look. Popular makeup artist and content creator Erica Taylor recently posted a clever and informative video detailing straightforward tips for enhancing your eyes, lips, cheekbones and brows with less product than you might be used to.

She also shared three common makeup mistakes that might be adding years to your look, and how to avoid them. “We’re going to do common mistakes that may age the face,” Taylor said at the beginning of the clip while noting that she was “almost 46” at the time of filming and been “in this industry of cosmetics as a makeup trainer for 25 years and this is what I see often from real life experience.”

Simple Makeup Mistakes That Could Add Years To Your Look, According To A Pro MUA1. Don’t Cut Your Eyeliner Wing Too Short Or Make Your Mascara Go ‘Outwards’

Taylor then outlined her plan for the upload: on one side of her face, she would deliberately apply makeup incorrectly to illustrate how minor errors can “age” someone. On the other side, she would expertly and thoughtfully apply makeup to demonstrate the striking contrast.

"I use the same exact foundation, concealer,  primer and setting on each side, so I just want to show you a few simple fixes that might make a big difference," she noted.

She then showed how, on the incorrect side of the face that "the brow is shorter and the liner is shorter." If you cut your eyeliner short, she stressed, your eye is going to look different, and it's thick."

2. Never Line Your Lips All The Way

The MUA also explained how her mascara was going "out" and she lined her lip "within the lip line, and all the way to the ends." Lining all the way to the ends, she noted, could make fine lines by the mouth look more enhanced.

3. Skip Blush On The Apples Of Your Cheeks

"We were taught to suck in your face and add contour, and to smile and add blush on the apple," Taylor pointed out. She emphasized that this could inadvertently make skin look droopier, saggier and heavier. "Now, I'm going to show you the difference in a few things with the same foundation and same base," she said.

Taylor shared some helpful pointers to keep in mind to make your features look more youthful and symmetrical. "If your eyebrow is longer, your eye is longer," she said, while pointing to the wing she created that she deemed ideal. The artist added that conversely, "if your eyebrow goes down, your eye goes down."

"If your liner cuts short and is too thick, your eye cuts short," she added. Taylor also shared that if you want to elongate a thin liner, "you don't have to do the lift, but make sure you get to the very end, even if you didn't do the tail." Next, she says that it's best to "lift your bronze above the cheek and your apple higher," as this provides an instant lift.

The Bottom Line

As for the lips, she says not to line "the full end of the top lip," and to go "a little over the top lip and to cut your liner right before the ends." For the bottom lip, she says to line it "a little under to lift." Taylor also recommended adding a tad of bronzer around the hairline to "warm it up" which gives a "more lit from within look."

Ultimately, Taylor noted that her tips were all "small things that make a big difference and are very easy fixes." We couldn't agree more and can't wait to try them!
