A hairstyle has the power to transform your entire look—sometimes more dramatically than makeup or clothing ever could. The right cut, part, or texturizing layers can illuminate your eyes, highlight your cheekbones, and frame your smile in a way that instantly brightens your face. Even small adjustments, such as softening a fringe, shifting a part, or adding subtle layers, can reveal bone structure and bring new balance and energy to your features.

But the opposite is also true. Common styling missteps that many of us make (often out of habit) can weigh hair down, drag the face, or obscure the features we want to showcase.

Here are share some of the most common hairstyling errors experts say we are making and how to fix them for a fresher, more flattering result.

The Difference Between Dragging Through Your Day And Feeling Great On Your Feet? These Arch Support Insoles

1. Drying Soaking Wet Hair

Blow-drying hair that’s still dripping wet can actually ruin volume and smoothness. Excess water forces you to use higher heat settings for longer periods of time, which increases heat damage and makes it harder to build lift at the roots. Hair that’s too wet also won’t hold shape well, leaving it flat once dry. A better method is to gently towel dry hair using a microfiber cloth or old T-shirt and only blow dry it once it is damp.

2. Not Sectioning Hair While Drying It

Trying to dry your hair all at once leads to uneven results and missed areas that fall flat. Without sections, you can’t properly direct airflow or build tension at the roots, which is key for smoothness and volume. Fix this mistake by dividing hair into manageable sections and drying it from bottom to top for better control and longer-lasting lift.

3. Not Pulling the Brush Tight Enough

When you don’t create enough tension with your round or paddle brush, hair won’t smooth out or hold its shape. Loose brushing results in frizz, weak bends, and minimal volume at the roots. Tension is what polishes the cuticle and creates major volume. Make sure you are pulling the brush firmly through each section while directing heat downward to build gloss and body.

4. Not Letting Your Hair Cool After Drying It

Heat sets the shape for your hair, but cooling locks it in. If you immediately move on before your hair cools, the style can collapse quickly—especially on fine or thinning hair. Make good use of your dryer’s cool-shot button or let each section cool in the brush or a clip before releasing it to preserve volume and longevity.
