Sagging skin is a common side effect of growing older as your skin naturally begins to lose collagen under the surface that is essential for maintaining the elasticity of your complexion. While there are skincare ingredients you can integrate into your day to day routine to stimulate collagen production and tighten the skin of your face, having some makeup tricks in your arsenal for creating the illusion of lifted, younger looking skin can make all the difference in your confidence from day to day. We checked in with licensed makeup artist, Theresa Novicky to get her expertise on reducing the appearance of aging skin with your contour, and in just three steps you’ll be able to see a major difference.
Opt For Cream
Choosing the best product to compliment your skin is one of the most important steps in ensuring the best contouring success, and according to Novicky, a creamier product is going to be more effective for blending effortlessly into the skin. “I opt for cream contour for my clients with aging skin. A great product is Anastasia Beverly Hills contour stick, and I recommend a color that is 3 shades darker than your skin tone,” she says. Using a darker shade can help to make your contour appear more dramatic even once blended which will naturally increase the tightening illusion it provides. Plus, cream products will melt into the skin much more smoothly, reducing the possibility of any product sinking into fine lines and wrinkles.
Find Your Placement
Placing your contour in the right area of your face is another make or break when it comes to providing anti-aging benefits to your complexion. “Apply it directly under your cheekbone and at an upward angle,” says Novicky. “This will give you an instant facelift.” If you apply your contour too low you run the risk of elongating your face, heightening the appearance of sagging skin, so sucking in your cheeks to locate the base of your cheekbones will create the ideal guideline for applying product.
Blend Well
Blending is one of the most important steps, and failing to adequately work the product into your skin can cause a garish look that only further emphasizes your age. While a beauty blender can often be effective for smoothing out foundation and concealer, Novicky suggests using a brush for this task. “Be sure to blend it well with a dense contour brush,” she notes, adding, “I don’t recommend using powder contour as it can age you as it tends to settle into fine lines and wrinkles.”
