If you are confronting the realities of aging (aren’t we all?) and you’re not 100 percent thrilled that sagging skin is part of the deal, you may be wondering what, if anything, you can do to minimize its effects. Many cosmetic procedures are great and all, and your dermatologist may be able to guide you in the direction of skin-tightening treatments like lasers and radiofrequency. But the reality is that a vast number of these treatments are prohibitively expensive or take several sessions to begin seeing results. If you have plans tonight or this week and want simple, affordable solutions to make your skin look its absolute best, makeup artists who have experience with mature skin are absolute geniuses in this area. Celebrity Makeup Artist Brett Freedman shares two contour tricks for hiding sagging skin over 50 (but, in truth, they can be used at any age to maximize your glow and highlight your bone structure).
Trick #1: Use Self-Tanner As Contour
Self tanner isn’t just for an all-over body glow — not since makeup artists have discovered its untapped potential as the least high maintenance way to achieve the perfect contour. Maybe you’re intimidated by contour makeup kits (all of those different shades) and can’t fathom how you’ll have time to sit and contour every part of your face when you barely have time to brush your teeth. This is where a great self tanner or self-tanning drops come in. The formula can be applied once every couple of days and you’ll basically wake up looking like you’re ready to have your photo taken. The trick is choosing a great formula and knowing a few good application tips.
“Apply self-tanner along jawline on top and under jaw, down the front of neck,” Freedman said. “I do this twice a week. This builds in a downplaying contour/shadow that doesn’t wash off. You wake up snatched! This trick is fashion stylist approved as there’s no transfer onto clothes — not ideal for shoots or red carpet.”
As for product picks, Freedman is a fan of Farmhouse Fresh’s Bronze Fox Tanning Drops. “Light formula and gorgeous lift of downplaying bronze,” Freedman said.
Trick #2: Choose Dewy Makeup
Again, this tip is going to rely not just on application technique, but also on the kind of formula that you choose. Basically, anything that leaves a dry, matte finish or consists of a cakey powder is a surefire way to age the skin. “Light reflection is a huge factor in youthful skin,” Freedman said. “Dewy/moist reads as younger. Rather than use full bodied highlighters I like to use a super subtle light catching cream. Enter Farmhouse Fresh’s Full Moon Dip. I dot just a touch on apples of cheeks, tip of nose and chin. I do this after makeup is done. This adds a glow-y touch of dewiness that feels oh-so-natural and not makeup-y!”
The best thing about both of these tips is that neither requires you to spend hours perfecting your contour makeup. Just a few simple products and a minimalist’s dream routine are all that’s needed.
