From their viral apparel to their incredible monthly deals, there’s so much to love about Costco (including that famous hot dog combo!). However, “bulk” doesn’t always mean “better.” In fact, there are a few Costco products that may not be worth buying at all, according to Julie Ramhold, a consumer analyst at DealNews.com who recently shared her insight with CNBC Make It.

Next time you’re making a stop at everyone’s favorite warehouse store, Ramhold says you’re likely better off avoiding dairy products, spices, fresh produce, and books. Read on to learn why!

1. Dairy products

Costco is known for their bulk deals, which is great when it comes to pantry essentials that won't go bad. However, as far as perishable foods like dairy products go, Ramhold says you're best leaving them on the shelf.

"Three pounds of cottage cheese for seven bucks is a great deal," Ramhold says. “But you’re not going to eat it fast enough to make it worth it." Fair! Of course, you may be an exception if you're a real dairy lover or are planning of making a big batch of mac and cheese—but just remember that too much dairy could be detrimental to your gut health.

2. Spices

What's a delicious meal without some tasty spices? While these essential ingredients can be great for both your tastebuds and your body (as many of them offer anti-inflammatory benefits), buying them in bulk from Costco may not be worth your money.

Believe it or not, spices have a shelf life. And although it's a long one (six months), it's likely not long enough to make your way through a five-pound container of lemon pepper.

"For a giant container of chili seasoning, if you’re not planning on making chili every single weekend, you probably don’t want to get something that big from Costco," Ramhold points out.

3. Fresh produce

Here's another option you may be better off avoiding if you're not planning on cooking in bulk, despite the great deal. Even the most enthusiastic potato lover is unlikely to make their way through an entire 20-lb bag before they go bad (but, hey, if you find a healthy recipe you love, you might prove us wrong!).

4. Books

Don't get us wrong—we love a great deal on books as much as the next guy. However, when it comes to Costco options, the deals may not be great, after all. Especially if you're looking for something a little more unique than the basic bestsellers.

"If you’re looking for something aside from bestsellers, you may have trouble finding it,” Ramhold warns. “I pretty much just ignore that section." Good to know! We'll stay shopping out our favorite independent bookstore instead.

As far as the best Costco products go, superfans say you shouldn't miss out on  these items  this summer.
