Costco has a loyal base of customers who exclusively shop at the chain for its amazing deals and the opportunity to buy in bulk. It makes sense for a lot of families, however, not just anyone can waltz into Costco and take advantage of the bargains. To get inside of a Costco, you have to have a membership, and it seems as though over the years certain customers have been pushing the limits of the membership policy, sharing and transferring memberships even though Costco doesn’t allow this.

Corporate must’ve gotten fed up with all the card sharing, because a new policy was just instated in Costco’s across America, and customers aren’t happy. Keep reading for more information.

New Membership Policy At Costco

While needing a Costco card to shop at Costco is far from new, Costco is seemingly getting stricter with these rules. Now, at the entrance of every Costco there’s a scanner, manned by an employee. All customers must scan their Costco card at the entrance, and if the picture on the Costco card doesn’t match the person holding the card, they will be refused entry, with no exceptions.

This means, as one TikToker pointed out, that shopping for sick or elderly family members that hold a membership is now impossible. “They don’t care if you’re shopping for your grandma,” user @neybabez posted on TikTok. “I’m leaving to Sam’s!” she wrote in the caption. The Costco website confirmed this in a statement: “Guests must also be accompanied by a valid member for entry.”

Furious Costco Members React To New Policy

Even the loyalest of Costco members are upset about the new policy, with customers sharing their gripes with the membership crackdown on social media. "Wow they found a way to make things move along even slower and add a line at the front door!" one person commented on an Instagram post about the policy. "How pleasant!"

"This is ridiculous I'm thinking of canceling Costco," another shared.

"Not a fan," another agreed. "They wouldn't let me stop and pick up my stepdad's medication right after he had surgery unless he was present. We have switched to Sam's Club and will never go back."

"Literally communism," another declared. "Publicly traded businesses must be stopped."

"I think this is what will send my loyalty to Walmart," another customer said. "Not a joke."
