Two kinds of shakes are being pulled from Costco‘s shelves because it could potentially be contaminated with harmful microorganisms. Yikes!

According to a recent press release by the food and beverage company Lyons Magnus LLC, it is “voluntarily recalling nutritional and beverage products due to the potential for microbial contamination, including from the organism Cronobacter sakazakii.” The company announcement, which was also posted by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warned, “While infection related to Cronobacter sakazakii is rare, the common symptoms of illness could include fever, vomiting and urinary tract infection. However, vulnerable and immunocompromised populations may be more susceptible to infection.”

As of August 5, they emphasized that no illnesses or complaints have been reported but consumers should still take note that the 53 products involved in the recall should not be consumed. “Preliminary root cause analysis shows that the products did not meet commercial sterility specifications,” FDA reports.

Out of the 53 products concerned, two drinks were previously sold at the big-box store company: Premier Protein and Glucerna.

Premier Protein sent out letters to shoppers and said, “Only Premier Protein shakes with the letters BT in the product code are impacted by this recall.” Those who purchased the Premier Protein 18-count pack of 11-ounce Vanilla or Café Latte shakes between May 1 and July 29, 2022 are the ones primarily affected.

“To identify whether the product you have is affected, check the lot number on your package, which is visible on the outer case or the top of the shake carton. If your product is part of this recall, do not use it and return it to your local Costco for a full refund,” Premier Protein added.

A similar message was sent to members who purchased the Glucerna Original Vanilla, Chocolate, and/or Strawberry 8 fluid oz tetra pack cartons in a 24 count club case between June 6 and July 27, 2022. Abbott clarified, “Other Glucerna products in a tetra carton that are not in scope of the recall [include] Glucerna Hunger Smart Meal Size Shake and Glucerna Protein Smart 30g protein Shake.”

“Anyone who has a recalled product in his or her possession should dispose of it immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a refund,” the FDA advised. To see images and to check the complete list of items involved in the product recall, click here.
