Coffee in the morning is an essential. Not only is it the boost of caffeine that so many of us depend on to get our days started, but coffee is actually quite good for you because it is high in antioxidants that can boost your metabolism. But the additives you put into your coffee can turn its benefits around in just a tablespoon or two. In fact, what you put in your coffee can become the difference of a healthy daily drink and a sugary beverage that contributes to various health issues.
For most people, a cup of coffee isn’t complete without a teaspoon of sugar and a flavored creamer. While many people have already realized that sugar is a bad choice for their morning drink, the truth is that most flavored, non-dairy creamers are just as bad - if not worse.
These creamers don’t contain any dairy, so they get their creamy consistency from a mixture of oil, sugar and thickeners. Even though a single serving of creamer might not show a high amount of fat, the ingredient can still cause weight gain because it is made with very unhealthy trans fats.
Even creamers made without fat are bad for you because they contain the same oils, artificial sweeteners and thickeners, as well as additional chemicals that lessen the fat content.
The best thing you can add to your coffee to add a dose of cream is simply half and half. It is equal parts milk and cream, which brings down its fat content but still adds a thick consistency to your coffee.
