It’s safe to say that inflation is impacting everything we spend our money on, from streaming services to food (expect maybe the hot dog combo at Costco), and some Taco Bell customers are officially fed up with the prices of their favorite items. Now, they want to do something about it by boycotting the Mexican fast food restaurant.
“Shrinkflation,” a.k.a. the issue of rising fast food prices coupled with shrinking portion sizes and a decline in quality, has become a common complaint in recent years. Taco Bell is one of the biggest offenders, and one Reddit user recently called for action by encouraging others to boycott due to the high prices. Learn more below.
Reddit user calls for Taco Bell boycott
How much would you be willing to spend on some cheesy, beefy goodness from Taco Bell? Prices are certainly getting extremely high, and one customer on Reddit recently reached their limit. They made a post to express their disappointment and encourage others to boycott: "Boycott Taco Bell!" the post is titled, with a photo of a sad-looking quesadilla attached to it.
"The prices are ridiculously high," they wrote, citing one post in the subreddit that claimed Taco Bell prices are up 55%. "It seems like fast food chains are using the inflation excuse to raise their prices, and will keep raising them if we keep buying their food."
They went on to say that although their family loves Taco Bell and eats it once a week, "it’s too damn expensive now," noting that it's better to eat at local Mexican restaurants that serve "better quality food at reasonable prices" and a quesadilla, which costs $5 at Taco Bell, is "one of the cheapest and easiest things to make at home."
However, many people in the comments pushed back on this sentiment, claiming that the best way to fight unreasonable prices is not to boycott altogether, but rather to "shop smarter."
Commenters say they won't boycott Taco Bell
"I'm not going to boycott Taco Bell," one comment reads. "Some prices are higher than they should be, but my answer to that isn't to flip out and boycott Taco Bell, it's to stop ordering the overpriced items."
For example, they recommend sticking to the Cravings Value Menu and the boxes, which are often "an absolute steal and better than practically any other deal in fast food," even better than "basically any deals Taco Bell has had in the last 15 years."
"People need to shop smart, rather than just buy wildly overpriced ala carte items then rage on the subreddit," they concluded.
Many comments echoed this sentiment, with one writing: "If you don’t like the prices then stop buying Taco Bell and stop complaining about it online. Move on with your life and let us who shop smart with it enjoy it,"
What do you think? Is boycotting fast food restaurants a reasonable response to the high prices? Or will you stick with your Crunchwrap Supremes, no matter how much they cost? Let us know in the comments!
