Are Dakota Johnson & Chris Martin Still Together? Split Rumors Reemerge After She's Spotted Without Her Engagement Ring
In March of this year, news broke that Johnson and Martin "got engaged years ago [in 2020] but were in no rush to get married," as a tipster told People. The love story between the Grammy winner and Persuasion actress dates back to 2017, when a People source dished that the two looked “cozy, laughing and affectionate” on a date at Sushi Park in Los Angeles.
In November of that year, Johnson was spotted at a Coldplay show. One month later, several sources confirmed to Us Weekly that they were indeed a couple. The Madame Web star and "Clocks" hitmaker continued to see each other, enjoying evenings at Soho House, strolls along Malibu's shoreline.
Dakota Johnson & Chris Martin's Romance: From 2017 To 2024
They made their public debut in the spotlight at Stella McCartney's Fall 2018 fashion show. Several outlets reported that they split in June 2019, only to get back together in August. Throughout the rest of the year and during 2020, Johnson and Martin worked on projects together, and those close to them gushed about them to the press.
This included Johnson's mother, Melanie Griffith and Martin's ex-wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, whom he shares two children with (daughter Apple, 20, and son Moses, 18). Johnson and Martin were also seen vacationing in 2021 and 2022. Martin later referred to Johnson as his "partner" on an episode of the Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend podcast in March 2023.
On Instagram in December 2023, Paltrow, 52, shared a photo with Johnson for her 8.7 million followers and told fans that they are "very good friends" and that they have a blended family. Before the split rumors reemerged this year, Johnson opened up about her relationship with Martin and his kids.
While speaking to Bustle in March, Johnson referred to Martin's son and daughter from his previous marriage to Paltrow as her "stepchildren." She told the outlet: "I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart." She also explained that she is "open" to becoming a mother herself one day.
In June of this year, a source told People that the Daddio star and "Yellow" singer were still "going strong," strong at the time, adding: "they’ve had ups and downs but now they’re definitely back on." Several weeks afterward, Johnson was seen attending Martin's performance at the Glastonbury Festival with his kids.
In August, the aforementioned rep for them denied the swirling split rumors and noted that they were "happily together." (We're keeping our eyes peeled for more info!)
