If Dakota Johnson thought starring in the Fifty Shades of Gray trilogy would be the most controversial thing she would ever do, she was very wrong…
The Persuasion actress, who is the daughter of actors Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, is facing major backlash online after her recent comments about the state of the film industry. During an appearance on Hot Ones, Johnson called Hollywood “a mess,” and essentially criticized studios for playing it safe; and many people on the internet quickly pointed out that her comment was a bit rich coming from a nepo baby. Dakota Johnson Makes Controversial Comments About Hollywood
The 35-year-old Daddio actress was asked why “Hollywood is risk-averse” on the show, and we don’t think host Sean Evans or audience were prepared for her answer!
“I think it’s hard when creative decisions are made by a committee,” Johnson began, adding: “And it’s hard when creative decisions are made by people who don’t even really watch movies or know anything about them. That tends to be what’s occurring a lot.”
The Lost Daughter actress, who recently split from Coldplay musician (and Gwyneth Paltrow's ex-husband) Chris Martin after eight years together, then took aim at Hollywood's obsession with reboots and franchises instead of taking creative chances. Another interesting yet somewhat hypocritical comment given that she starred in the Fifty Shades trilogy: Fifty Shades of Gray, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed!
"When something does well… studios want to keep that going so they remake the same things. But humans don't want that," she claimed, adding: "They want fresh. They want to feel new things, experience new things, see new things."
She wrapped up by saying: "So I don't know, I guess it's all just a bit of a mess right now, isn't it?"

Reddit Comments
The internet didn't take too kindly to her criticism of the industry, with many slamming her for nepotism, and others calling out some of the spin-offs and sequels she herself has starred in.
"Not Madame Web. That will never be remade," quipped one Reddit user, in reference to her movie which is a spin-off from Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU) and performed poorly at the box office. "Ya, sometimes they even just hire the daughters of famous actors for stuff instead of finding new talent," slammed a second, in an apparent dig at Dakota.
"Says the multigenerational nepo baby who got her big break acting in Fifty Shades, a smutty fanfiction based on Twilight… oh [expletive] maybe she has a point," concurred a third, as a fourth echoed: "Also because of nepotism but she doesn't wanna talk about that."
"I don't know why but I die laughing every time she gives an opinion on Hollywood," commented a fifth Reddit user, as a sixth critic added: "Hollywood is a mess because it keeps giving work to talentless people like Dakota Johnson." Ouch! "She would know a thing or two about bad movies," criticized another non-fan, as someone else said: "The fact that she keeps getting work is also a great example of why Hollywood is a mess."
