Charging your phone doesn’t have to be complicated, nor need it come with a list of rules. But it helps to remember a few standard procedures and things you should never do when charging your device if you want a healthy iPhone battery.

If you’re noticing your iPhone heating up regularly, especially after it has been hooked up to a charger and faithfully being powered up, one tech expert says you can easily stop making this “damaging” charging mistake that ruins your iPhone’s battery strength and “heats up” your device.

Remove Your Phone Cover

The cover you purchase separately to place over your phone protects it from falls and some spills. It can keep your screen from getting smashed to bits — so it isn’t exactly a non-essential accessory.

But if your phone is routinely heating up, the issue might be that too many things are going on at once. Perhaps you’re using a too-fast charger for your device. Or the problem could be simpler: your phone cover is causing it to heat up.

Phone covers aren’t generally the source of extreme battery damage and other factors are usually more responsible for it heating up, including using the wrong chargers or charging your phone in extreme temperatures. But it won’t hurt to remove the cover and let your phone charge without it on, as this can help reduce its temperature.

Your phone’s lithium-ion battery is extremely sensitive to temperatures. Charging your phone often in a too-cold or too-hot room can cause your battery to degrade over time. The ideal temperature in which to keep your phone — and charge it — is between 32°F to 95°F, according to Apple. Keep it away from humid conditions and, when necessary, remove its cover to bring down the temperature.
